Area Code Prefix Change

Why change now?

Why Change Now?

There are three major reasons concerning why UCR is performing these changes now:

The 909/951 area code split is state-mandated

The area code change is mandated by the California Public Utilities Commission.

A prefix shift is required at UCR

UCR has finally "run out" of 787 numbers. Fortunately, Computing and Communications (C&C) has been able to acquire all numbers associated with the 827 prefix. These numbers have slowly been appearing across campus. All of Economics, for example, utilizes the 827 prefix. We intentionally sought out the 827 prefix since those numbers spell out "UCR", as in UCR-BEAR (827-2327).

UCR will be changing to the 827 prefix in parallel with the aforementioned state-mandated area code change

UCR's five-digit dialing

Since UCR uses five-digit dialing (for most of campus, this means dialing an "8" plus the extension you wish to reach), on-campus dialing will be much easier if everyone utilizes the same prefix. Campus 787 prefixes will become 827 on July 17th, 2004. At that time, campus five-digit dialing will also change to "2" plus the extension. A "grace period" extending from July 17 to October 29, 2004, will allow the use of either 827 or 787.
