Junkmail Settings

Some rules are OWA only (server-side), and some rules are Outlook only (client-side). There are some specific rules operations that will not work in the server-side and are limited to the client only.

OWA cannot edit client-side only rules created by Outlook (rules such as notify user, play sound if rule matches). It will prompt the user if they would like to disable these rules. If the user chooses disable, the client side rules will be disabled. If they choose cancel, they cannot edit any rules in OWA and must use Outlook for rule editing.

The best way is to use OWA to create the inbox rules.

OWA Junk Filtering Rules

  1. Login to OWA (post.ucr.edu)
  2. Select 'Options...' at the top right, a drop down menu will be presented, select 'See All Options'.
  3. Select the 'Block or Allow" tab.
  4. Select the 'Automatically filter junk e-mail' radio button. Add to your safe and block senders list by entering email addresses.
  5. Click the 'Save' button on the bottom right to make any changes.

Outlook Junk Mail Filters

Junk Mail filtering is already setup for Exchange using the same parameters as mirapoint (webmail). Follow these steps for an optional rule setup of Outlook to automatically move email identified by Exchange as junk mail into the Junk E-Mail folder.

Setting Up The Junk Mail Filter For Outlook 2007 & Outlook 2010

Outlook 2007
  • Launch Outlook.  Go to Tools->Organize.
    • On the top right of Outlook, click on Rules and Alerts.
Outlook 2010
  • Launch Outlook. Go to File -> Info
    • Click on Manage Rules and Alerts.




  • Click New Rule found on the top left of the new window.
  • From the list, choose "Check Messages when they arrive."  Press the next button at the bottom.
  • From the list provided, check the option: "with specific words in the message header."
  • At the bottom of this window (Step 2), click on the blue underlined text that says "specific words."  A new window will appear.  Copy and paste in the following phrase:
    • X-MS-Exchange-Organization-SCL: 9
  • Press Add.
  • Press OK.
  • Now press next to continue.

 

  • From the list provided, check the option: "move it to the specified folder."

 

 

  • At the bottom of this window (Step 2), click on the blue underlined text that says "specified."  A new window will appear.  Choose your Junk E-Mail Folder.  Press Finish to complete this rule.  Press OK to return to Outlook.

 

 

  • Go to Actions (or the HOME tab) ->Junk (E-Mail)->Junk E-Mail Options.  A new window will appear.  Set the option for "No Automatic Filtering."  Press OK to return to Outlook.
  • Next log onto OWA at http://post.ucr.edu/owa
  • At the top right of the screen, click on options.  Along the left column, click on "Block or Allow."  Change the setting to "Don't move mail to my Junk E-Mail folder."  Press the save button on the bottom right of the screen.
