Google Apps for Education

In addition to e-mail, R'Mail accounts offer a variety of web-based Google applications. The following is a list of tools that comprise the Google Apps for Education Core Services.

For more information, see the R'Docs subsite.

To access these applications, login to your R'Mail account then click on the desired application in the top menu. For more information and support on using Google Apps, please visit the Tutorials page or the Google Help Center. All icons link to the Google Apps Learning Center section for that tool. This is a great way to get started on how to use each application!

Communicate

  • Gmail iconGmail (R'Mail) - R'mail is the offering of Gmail from Google. There are differences between the education version and a personal Gmail account.
  • Calendar iconCalendar - Spend less time planning and more time doing with shareable calendars that integrate seamlessly with Gmail (R'Mail), Drive, Contacts, Sites, and Hangouts.

Store

Google offers two services for file storage/sharing options:

  • Drive icon

As of May 12, 2018 the Google Drive desktop client will be replaced with two new sharing/storage services.  View a comparison for the differences between Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream to determine the best option to meet your needs.  View step-by-step details if you need instructions for transitioning from the Drive client to the new services.

Google Backup and Sync.  This service syncs and stores content locally on your computer and devices.

Google Drive File Stream.  This service provides a navigable window to your stored files and folders from the cloud, and does not download them locally until you choose to use a file.  You can only use this service with your UCR NetID account.

  • Drive iconTeam Drive - Google Team Drives are shared spaces where teams can easily store, search, and access their files anywhere, from any device. Unlike files in My Drive, files in Team Drive belong to the team instead of an individual. Even if members leave, the files stay exactly where they are so your team can continue to share information and get work done. Team Drives cannot by synced to your Google desktop drive app.
  • NOTE:  You will only be able to use the Drive File Stream application to see the Team Drive from your local computer; it will not work with the Backup and Sync client.

Collaborate

Create and edit docs, spreadsheets, and presentations right in your browser. Multiple people can work at the same time, and every change is saved automatically.

  • Docs iconDocs - Create documents with images, tables, equations, drawings, links, and more. A social commenting feature is also available to manage feedback when shared.
  • Sheets iconSheets - Tools available include advanced formulas, embedded charts, filters, and pivot tables.
  • Slides iconSlides - A presentation editor allows you to create slides with embedded videos, animations, and transitions. These presentations can then be published on the web or shared privately.
  • formsForms - Create forms, polls, or even quizzes.
  • Sites iconSites - Launch a website for your class, team, or project with the easy site builder. You don't need to know how to write a single line of code.
