Apple E-Mail


Apple Mail comes pre-installed with new Apple systems and is included in OS X. To open it, click the postage stamp icon in your dock or access Macintosh HD > Applications > Mail.

Apple Mail, or Mac Mail, can be configured to open R'Mail emails. IMAP is the term for setting up a server sync of email. POP downloads your emails to your computer (also called a "local" copy) and they are no longer on the server. It is recommended to configure for IMAP.   

Instructions to configure the UCR Global Address Book are below. 

Enabling POP/IMAP in R'Mail on the Web

In order to use a POP/IMAP e-mail program with your R'Mail account you will first need to enable POP/IMAP access.

First, enable IMAP in R'Mail

  1. Click the Gears icon
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP
  4. Select Enable IMAP
  5. Click Save Changes
  6. Set your Google Password (Your Google Password will be your password only for POP/IMAP access to your account.  You will continue to use your UCR password for web access.)

For IMAP/POP access you should also turn on "Allow less secure apps" in your R'Mail account settings:

  • In your R'Mail account, under your account initial or image, click My Account.
  • Click "Sign-in & security" and scroll to the section for "Connected apps and sites"
  • Flip the toggle for "Allow less secure apps" so that it is in the On position.

Set your R'Mail (Google) Password

Please see the instructions on how to set your R'Mail Google Password. This must be completed before setting up IMAP or POP.

Configure Mac Mail (OS 10.10+)

To set up Mail (OS 10.10+) to use IMAP:

Click on the Apple menu then select System Preferences.

Click on Internet Accounts

In the list of account options select Google Accounts
Enter your UCRNetID@ucr.edu email address and click Next.  Select Add a Mail Account
You will be redirected to the UCR Central Authentication Service (CAS) page.  Log in with your UCR NetID and password. Account Information

Select which applications you would like to set up with your R'Mail account:

  • Mail
  • Contacts
  • Calendars
  • Messages
  • Notes

Click Done.

To set up Mail (OS 10.10+) to use POP:

Click on the Apple menu then select System Preferences.

Click on Internet Accounts

In the list of account options select Add Other Account Accounts
Select Mail Account  Select Add a Mail Account

Enter your account information:

  • Name:  Name as you would like it to be displayed in your emails
  • Email Address:  Your UCRNetID@ucr.edu email address
  • Password:  Your Google Password

Click Sign In

Account Information

You will then receive a message saying "Unable to verify account name or password".  Manually enter your account settings:

  • Email Address:  UCRNetID@ucr.edu
  • User Name: UCRNetID@ucr.edu
  • Password: Your Google Password
  • Account Type: POP
  • Incoming Mail Server: pop.gmail.com
  • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com

Click Sign In

Configure Mac Mail (OS 10.9)

To set up Mail (OS 10.9) to use IMAP:

Click on the Apple menu then select System Preferences.

Click on Internet Accounts

Select "Add a Mail Account" then click Create  Select Add a Mail Account

Enter your account information:

  • Name:  Name as you would like it to be displayed in your emails
  • Email Address:  Your UCRNetID@ucr.edu email address
  • Password:  Your Google Password

Click Create

You will then receive a message saying that your account must be manually configured.  Click Next.

Enter your Incoming Mail Server Info:

  • Account Type:  IMAP
  • Mail Server:  imap.gmail.com
  • User Name:  UCRNetID@ucr.edu
  • Password:  your Google Password

Click Next

You'll have pre-filled content for incoming server info. Click Next.

Enter your Outgoing Mail Server Info:

  • SMTP Server:  smtp.gmail.com
  • User Name:  UCRNetID@ucr.edu email address
  • Password:  your Google Password

Click Next

You'll have pre-filled content for outgoing server info. Click Create.

Select which applications you would like to set up with your R'Mail account:

  • Mail
  • Contacts
  • Calendars
  • Messages
  • Notes

Click the Details button in the upper right corner to edit the name of the account.

Put the new name in the Description field.

Click OK

Your Mac will then synchronize your R'Mail account in all of the accounts that you selected.

Make sure the Accounts tab is selected then click on your newly created account.

Next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) select Edit SMTP Server List.

If you have multiple outgoing mail servers set up, click on the mail server entry for your R'Mail account.

Select Advanced.

Enter your outgoing mail server settings:

  • Select to Use default ports (25, 465, 587)
  • Check Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL for 465 and TLS for 587)
  • For Authentication select Password
  • User Name:  UCRNetID@ucr.edu email address
  • Password:  Google Password

Configure UCR's Global Address Book

Follow the instructions below to configure the global address book for UCR employees on your desktop client. 

1. Go to System Preferences. MacMail System Preferences
2. Click on Internet Account. MacMail Internet Accounts
3. Click on 'Add Other Account..' You may need to scroll all the way down.
(Note: There will be slight variations, depending on the version of OS X)

4. Choose LDAP account MacMail LDAP account

5. Enter the following settings:
Description: UCR LDAP
Search Base: ou=persons,dc=ucr,dc=edu
Server Address: ldap.ucr.edu
Port: 389
Authentication: None

Click 'Sign In'

Now when using Mac Mail, you should be able to type a portion of someone's name or address, and after a few moments, suggestions from the campus LDAP server should be provided.
