How Does It Work?

Chatter, Mobile Outlook & SyncML Synchronization Process

E-mail: Chatter

  1. The user receives an e-mail in her Webmail Inbox.
  2. The Webmail server notifies Chatter e-mail on the user’s handheld of the new e-mail.
  3. The Webmail server passes the e-mail to Chatter on the Treo handheld in standard IMAP format, via UCR’s network, the public Internet, or the wireless network of her cellular provider.
  4. The Treo notifies the user of the arrival of the new e-mail.
  5. If the user reads or replies to the e-mail, or composes a new e-mail, this information is sent to the Webmail server and then to the recipient in reverse order of step 3.

E-mail: Outlook/Messaging

  1. The user receives an e-mail in her Webmail Inbox.
  2. The user’s device initiates contact with the Webmail server at a pre-determined interval set by the user
  3. The Webmail server passes the e-mail to Outlook on the Windows Mobile handheld in standard IMAP format, via UCR’s network, the public Internet, or the wireless network of her cellular provider.
  4. The handheld notifies the user of the arrival of the new e-mail.
  5. If the user reads or replies to the e-mail, or composes a new e-mail, this information is sent to the Webmail server and then to the recipient in reverse order of step 3.

Calendar: Synthesis SyncML

  1. The user creates an appointment on the Oracle Calendar Server, via Outlook, the Oracle Calendar Client, or the Oracle Calendar web interface.
  2. Note: Until the user synchronizes the calendar or her Treo, using the SyncML application, no changes are made to her Treo calendar.
  3. The user synchronizes her calendar via the SyncML application. For Palm OS handhelds, this process can be automatics or initiated manually depending on the version of SyncML.  For Windows Mobile handhelds, it can be set to occur automatically at specified intervals.
  4. The new appointment is passed from the Oracle Calendar Server to the Treo via UCR’s network, the public Internet, or the wireless network of her cellular provider.
  5. If the user modifies or deletes the appointment, or creates a new appointment on her handheld, the information is propagated to the Oracle Calendar server through the reverse of the steps above.
