Dr. Leo P. Schouest

Dr. Leo Schouest has been with the UC Riverside campus for over 30 years and has in the last 10 years successfully implemented many instructional technology initiatives and pedagogical principles campus wide particularly within the Sciences. With over 30 years experience in both teaching and administration at private and public higher education research and teaching institutions, he provides a focused, balanced and student-centered approach to teaching and learning.

Besides managing the UC Riverside learning management system, he is also a consultant for the UCR campus re-accreditation process with experience in evaluating learning goals, outcomes and assessment with a particular interest in the development of rubrics to assess the effectiveness of learning goals. Working with other team members, he has helped to develop individual departmental approaches to assessing student-learning outcomes as they relate to departmental learning goals.

With additional interests in educational psychology and classroom ecology, he has been instrumental in developing classroom environments (Hyperstruction Studio and Flex classroom designs) that encourage greater student engagement and active participation especially in large lecture venues. Recently, an important area of interest has been evaluating effective ways to increase peer-to-peer collaboration via social media and the impact of mobile computing on the learning environment.

Dr. Nicolay earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from USC in 1989. With experience in Music and Fine Arts computer applications, audio and video editing, he brings a creative component to the Instructional Technology Group. He has worked in higher education since 1989 and joined  Computing & Communications in 2000. He is the campus site license coordinator and has extensive experience in campus software licensing issues.

Mark is experienced in supporting iLearn and is active in evaluating and implementing instructional technology in the classroom. He worked with the team that created iGrade, UCR's online grading system. He also works with the UCR Learning Center to support an ongoing pilot program using the Blackboard Early Warning System, a tool used to identify and support academically at-risk students.

Dr. Mingsheng Yang (Ming Yang) has been working at Computing & Communications, UCR since 07/1998 as Instructional Technology Consultant/Analyst. His major duties at UCR include helping faculty to assess and implement their needs for instruction and research. Provide advanced technical support to faculty on how to use Academic Computing facilities, department computers and personal workstations for research and instruction. Provide primary support of campus learning management system Blackboard. Help develop and integrate technical resources for the expanding role of instructional technology in supporting of teaching. Train and supervise graduate student researchers in support of faculty in the instructional needs of the campus. Support workshops and give presentations on the many aspects of instructional technology and course delivery.

Ming Yang obtained his Ph.D in 1998 in Educational Administration with emphasis on Instructional Design and educational Technology.  His doctoral dissertation combines qualitative research with quantitative research methodologies and his research area covers inter-disciplinary studies of educational technology and administration. In 1988, He earned his MA in applied linguistics and BS degree in 1982 in technology and engineering.

He has been working in the Higher Educational field for about 30 years. He had been working in several universities in mainland China including Henan University of Science and Technology; Central China University of Science and Technology, and Shanghai University of Science and Technology as a researcher, an administrator, and an assistant professor. There, he published very well at some major publications nationally in the area of educational research.

Since 1992, Ming Yang has been working in the educational technology field in six US universities include University of Missouri, Kansas City, Oberlin College, Kenyon College, and University of California. His expertise includes distance learning, multimedia technology, technical writing and authoring, faculty technical training, instructional design, and technology implementation.

Currently at UCR, Dr. Ming Yang remains active in his instructional technology role by giving seminars/forums as appropriate and collaborating with departments, library and faculty. He is also active outside of campus in instructional technology. Ha has been a member of TechEd, EDCAUSE, and UCCSC. As co-chair of the Web 2.0 technical forum, Ming Yang brings new perspective to the campus.

Dr. Ming Yang has been teaching in Higher Education for many years. He had taught in universities in China for about 10 years before he came to US. Since 1999, Dr. Ming Yang has been teaching in University of Phoenix as a doctoral faculty for some main courses of informational technology, programming, as well as database management.
