ACADEMIC COMPUTING AND COMPUTING SUPPORT SERVICES HIGHLIGHTS

Web Course in a Box (WCB)

Computing and Communications WCB servers are currently hosting some 300 courses containing 30,000 plus enrolled students. Students are increasingly using the WCB infrastructure to submit web projects (this is a new feature offered faculty this quarter).

Student Laptops

Executive Vice Chancellor Warren is forming a task force to examine requiring student laptop computer ownership. UCR's College of Engineering is interested in piloting this initiative.

CNAS Multi-Media Statistics Teaching Facility

C&C is partnering with CNAS on the development of an undergraduate multi-media teaching facility. C&C will pilot the use of digital "follow me" video technology when this lab opens in Fall 2000.

IPTV Server used for Academic Video on Demand

C&C is partnering with Economics faculty to present Economics 2 courses (via IPTV) over UCR's intranet. The material is available via UCR's public microcomputer labs, residence halls, and via the Science Library's DHCP supported ports. C&C will expand this effort in the Fall 2000 quarter.

Faculty Support Position to Open Shortly

C&C will begin a search for a Director of Faculty and Student Technical support. Reporting to this position will be C&C's Instructional Technologists, Media Resources, Student Computing Services, and Distance Learning.

CHASS Social Science Computing Facility

C&C will partner with CHASS in the development of a Social Science Computing Facility. Initially, this effort will encompass services for Economics, Sociology, Political Science, and History.

Proxy Server

Partnering with the Library, C&C will bring a proxy server on-line shortly. The proxy server will complement the recently deployed RAS server (56 Kbs dial up) to allow for remote access to Library electronic resources.

COMMUNICATIONS HIGHLIGHTS

Wireless Network

Utilizing Aironet wireless technology, C&C has installed a wireless network in the Bourns College of Engineering (COE) and the Commons cafeteria area. COE is prototyping this technology (as well as the student laptop computer initiative).

New Residence Hall

A third on-campus residence hall, Pentland Hall, will be completed in Fall 2000. This facility will feature 400 10/100 Fast Ethernet connections and increase the total number of residence hall connections to about 3,000 (including labs, administration ports, etc.).

NetScreen Firewall Installed

A NetScreen firewall has been installed between the residence halls and UCR's core network. The firewall has a web interface, is capable of traffic monitoring and traffic shaping over a 100 Mbs connection.

Long Haul Point-to-Point Wireless

C&C is strongly considering implementing Cisco's long haul point to point wireless solution to meet the data network needs of a 400 pillow public / private student housing facility located about 2 miles from campus. The system will create 45 Mbs of bandwidth over a non-licensed, public frequency. C&C is considering wireless as an alternative to aerial fiber.

ADMINISTRATIVE COMPUTING HIGHLIGHTS

Mainframe Upgrade

C&C is strongly considering upgrading its IBM mainframe (from a dual processor CMOS box to a single processor -about 120 MIPS- system).

CLIENT SERVER COMPUTING AND ADMINISTRATIVE COMPUTING HIGHLIGHTS

UCR Financial System (UCRFS) Data Warehouse Deployed

UCRFSlite (the UCRFS financial and budgetary data warehouse) has been deployed to about 300 users. The Windows GUI application uses an Oracle database.

UCOP Reporting

UCR is now current with all financial and budgetary corporate reporting.

Various UCRFS / PeopleSoft Notes

Progress continues on the UCRFS implementation. New applications and reports that have been recently released include the following: enhanced trial balance report, enhanced fund equity report, Federal Cost Transfer application, and an application that determines if financial transactions are being processed against FAU combinations that have NO current year budget.

MEDIA RESOURCES HIGHLIGHTS

Multimedia Classroom in a Box

C&C is expanding its prototyping of the Multimedia Classroom in a Box initiative. Under this program, faculty and TAs are provided with a portable (on wheels) "kit" that contains a laptop, projection device, speakers, etc. The "kit" can be used in virtually any classroom on campus for multimedia, internet based instructional presentations.

Wireless Multimedia Classroom Prototype C&C will be partnering with COE / Computer Science on the deployment of a wireless multimedia projection / instruction system. In a large classroom, C&C will connect a permanently mounted projection device to a computer running PC Anywhere. Using the wireless network, faculty / TAs will connect to the computer running PC Anywhere allowing for completely wireless instructional presentations.

OTHER NOTES

C&C to Move in Fall 2000

UCR is experiencing rapid and unprecedented enrollment growth. As a result of this growth, C&C will be giving up virtually all "core" campus office space EXCEPT the Statistics Computer machine room. C&C will move to a peripheral campus location and will be housed in "permanent modular" buildings.

EVC Warren to Begin Search for Permanent AVC Position

EVC Dave Warren has completed a job description for C&C's Associate Vice Chancellor position. The position, which will be largely unchanged from the one Larry Sautter held prior to his passing, should be advertised shortly.

C&C and EVC to implement Martrixed Organizational Technology Support Structure

In a continuing effort to improve campus technology support, the EVC and C&C will implement a matrixed technology support structure. The highlight of this structure will be formally "named" technical liaisons in all the Colleges and Vice Chancellor's offices.
