ACADEMIC COMPUTING AND COMPUTING SUPPORT SERVICES HIGHLIGHTS

Blackboard Usage (Campus Learning Management System) Continues to Increase.

Campus use of the C&C supported Learning Management System continues to increase dramatically. This quarter (Winter 2003) approximately 700 courses (almost exclusively lectures) are available to students on the campus Blackboard server. This represents about 78% of all campus lectures. C&C has three full time PhDs and four half-time graduate students supporting Blackboard.

C&C Offering a Wide Variety of Workshops for Faculty.

As the number of Blackboard classes has increased this academic year, C&C has offered a record number of IT workshops for faculty. These workshops include the following: Blackboard Overview/Support, Basics of Photoshop for Instruction, Overview of Digital Tools for Teaching, and Classroom Technology in an A/B/M classroom.

Webmail for Students a Success.

C&C deployed a new webmail service for students in October 2002. Since this deployment, about 1.9 million messages have been sent via the new system and about 700,000 received. C&C is planning on deploying this system to staff and faculty during the spring and summer of this year.

"Distance Learning" Computer Based Statistics Instructional Facility to come On-Line in January.

C&C will use Polycom Video Conferencing systems to "link together" two computer facilities used for undergraduate statistics instruction. These labs will use software that gives the instructor control over ALL computers in both labs (e.g. to blank all computers, project the instructor's computer to all computers, project student "X's" computer to all computers, etc.). The total number of computers in both labs will total approximately 50.

COMMUNICATIONS HIGHLIGHTS

ONI Update.

Progress continues on the project to connect UCR to the ONI network. Virtually all the on-campus "last mile" work has been completed. C&C has facilitated the submission of requests for city permits (although some difficulties have been encountered in this area). An order for the network electronics (see below) should be completed shortly.

Backbone Network to be Upgraded.

As part of the ONI upgrade, C&C will upgrade the campus backbone network. The upgraded backbone will be based on Cisco 6500 series routers. C&C will also acquire two Packeteer units for traffic shaping as well as gigabit capable monitoring and intrusion detection systems as part of the upgrade.

Firewall Analyst Hired.

C&C has completed development of an Intel / Linux firewall and has deployed it into UCR's production network. The firewall is designed to protect specific campus subnets with particularly important data / systems. C&C has also submitted a plan to Academic Planning and Budget that would allow C&C to hire an analyst on a fee-for-service basis to support the distributed firewall. An analyst has been hired to support this deployment and the first non-C&C firewall has been deployed (within the Vice Chancellor of Administration's unit).

Wireless Deployment Continues and an 802.11a Wireless Access Point Under Evaluation.

C&C is evaluating a wireless "access point" that will support BOTH 802.11a and 802.11b service. If testing is successful, C&C hopes to deploy 50 units this academic year, and an additional 200 by the end of FY 04/05. UCR currently has about 120 "centrally" deployed 802.11b access points.

Recruitment Underway for Network Security Analyst.

C&C is recruiting for a network security analyst. This position is in addition to the firewall analyst that has been hired on a fee-for-service basis.

CENTER FOR VISUAL COMPUTING HIGHLIGHTS

CVC Deploys Web Site Supporting Faculty "Off Campus" Access.

CVC recently deployed a new site providing detailed information concerning faculty "off campus" network access. Please visit the site (http://www.cnc.ucr.edu/focas/). Faculty have responded well to the site that provides a roadmap to VPN, Proxy, RAS, and C&C network configuration services.

T.A. Evaluation System.

CVC is contracting with the Graduate Division to automate the Teaching Assistant evaluation process. The goal is to accept some 30,000 plus evaluations via the web and to provide departments and graduate students analysis and reporting via an on-line search engine and static reports. The system will be completely "table driven" and will hopefully be used for all types of campus surveys, questionnaires, and evaluations.

Academic Personnel System.

CVC is contracting with the Office of Academic Personnel to produce a Faculty Merit and Promotion tracking system. If successful, the system might become a replacement for similar (shadow) systems running at the department and college level. Both the Academic Personnel System and the T.A. Evaluation system are being develop with Oracle and the OAS (Oracle Application Server) development tool set.

ADMINISTRATIVE COMPUTING HIGHLIGHTS

Planning Effort Continues: Options for SIS Upgrade / Replacement.

The effort to produce a report containing campus options for upgrading / replacing its Student Information System is nearing completion. A web page documenting this effort can be found at http://www.cnc.ucr.edu/sis/. The report is due to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affaires by January 31st, 2003. C&C has hosted visits from PeopleSoft, SCT, and UCLA will be providing information on the "make" alternative.

SEVIS Reporting Effort Underway.

C&C has received funding to create a SEVIS / INS reporting infrastructure for the campus. C&C is partnering with International Services, Graduate Division and University Extension. C&C has acquired software, a server, test INS accounts, etc. and progress is being made against the January 31st deadline.

Progress on Several Student Information System Projects Achieved.

C&C has made progress on several Student Information System projects during the past six to eight months. For example, on the IA+ (now SCT) platform, C&C has converted Student ID from Social Security Number to a randomly generated number. C&C has also deployed a web based "student billing" report and work in underway on a "cradle to grave" transfer student Articulation management system. Finally, specifications are being developed for an automated class wait list system.

CLIENT SERVER COMPUTING HIGHLIGHTS

PeopleSoft 8.4 Test System Operational.

C&C has completed deployment of the PeopleSoft 8.4 test (sandbox) system. It is running on an Oracle/Solaris environment. Preliminary testing has demonstrated that only a very few of the customizations deployed at UCR are included natively in PeopleSoft 8.4 system (e.g. distributed on-line transaction processing, staffing, post audit notification, etc.). Preliminary planning suggests that the upgrade to a completely web environment will be completed in mid-2004.

Planning Underway for a Web Based Travel System.

C&C is reviving an effort to deploy a web based Travel Planning and Expense Reporting System. Work on this system began in 1999, but was put on hold due to the Financial System deployment. The system will feature "department side" document imaging allowing departments (not Accounting) to become the "department of record" for travel related documents.

Short Term Interest Allocation and Charges (STIP) now Automated in UCR Financial System.

C&C has completed the development of an automated system that calculates and allocates (debits and credits) short-term interest by fund. The system's rules are almost all table driven and therefore the system can be completely managed and maintained by Accounting.

Generic Web Based Recharge System Deployment Nearing Completion.

C&C has virtually completed deployment of the Web Based Recharge system. The system automates input of debits and credits for some 40 plus "small recharge" operations. The Web Based Recharge system allows each service provider to add optional fields to their web page to meet their particular on-line needs. Campus service providers (without any coding) can size optional fields, make these fields character or numeric, validated or not validated (and list boxes can be created), and required or not-required.

Pro Card and PCT.

C&C (in collaboration with Purchasing and Accounting) has completed an effort leading to campus deployment of a Pro Card (credit card) purchasing system. The Pro Card system will be supported with an on-line cost transfer system and will be completely integrated into the campus Post Audit Notification system.
