ACADEMIC COMPUTING AND COMPUTING SUPPORT SERVICES HIGHLIGHTS
|
| Blackboard Successes
The campus learning management system (Blackboard)
continues to become an important mission critical component to the UCR
instructional program. The Fall 03 quarter has over 1100 courses constituting
all lecture courses with more than five students presently in the system.
In addition, many large enrollment courses have spun off their associated
laboratories and discussion sections as unique instances separate from
the lecture. This represents a 250% increase in courses from Fall 02.
This implementation has been totally voluntary on the part of the faculty.

of Fall 2003 classes
Funding Received to Upgrade to Blackboard Enterprise
Version As a direct outcome of this
increased utilization of Blackboard, an increasing number of instructors
are using or considering using on-line assessments within the Blackboard
environment. Faculty acceptance of the system has been very positive
and resulted in the Executive Council providing permanent funding for
the upgrade to the Enterprise edition. The campus is moving forward
to upgrade to version 6 for the Fall 03 quarter.
Blackboard Not Just for Class Content (Interesting uses of Blackboard)
An interesting side effect has been the increase
in faculty requests to use the Blackboard environment for administrative
(advising) and research related functions. Several chancellor Task Force
entities are using the collaborative and document distribution features
as a way to conduct virtual committee meetings. One research group,
The Cenote Project, is using the system as an international collaborative
environment between UCR and researchers in Mexico.
Funding Continued for RA's To
support the continued use of Blackboard, our RA support program has
received an additional year of funding to aid faculty in the conversion
of their course content to the digital environment. We hope to initiate
a grant program directed at faculty to support localized personnel support
to help in the conversion to digital material.
Update on Collaboratory The UCR
Statistical Consulting Collaboratory almost doubled its computing resources
with the addition of another laboratory. The Collaboratory is designed
to foster a research collaborative environment between faculty, graduate
students, and the community in statistical computing. A faculty Director
has been hired and presently a Manager is being identified for day-to-day
functions.
New Student Orientation Presentations and CD During
Summer 03, C&C was provided a first time opportunity to engage with
all new freshmen that attended the eight BearFacts summer orientation
sessions (3396 students). New students were presented with information
regarding Webmail, Blackboard, wireless networking and VPN. Students
were presented with a CD describing all C&C services which included
many multimedia tutorials describing various services.
C&C and the Library to Collaborate on Support of Access to Copyrighted
Material via Proxy/VPN In an effort
to provide wide accessibility to UCR Library on-line resources and maintain
copyright compliance, C&C has deployed three robust services to accommodate
the various needs of our faculty, students and staff. We have secure
Proxy, VPN and RAS (dial in) services available as needed. There are
a myriad of online services, each with its own unique license terms.
With the array of services offered we are able to meet all needs. |

COMMUNICATIONS HIGHLIGHTS
|
| ONI is Operational The
dual dark fiber connections to the new CalREN network are now operational.
UCR staff went into the field to assist CENIC and Cisco staff in getting
the "last mile" dark fiber connections running toward both Los Angeles
and San Diego. UCR and CENIC engineers then brought the network on line
by setting up the routing structure. The connections to CalREN are now
working flawlessly.
Cooperative Service Agreements with Residence Halls The
connections from the campus core network to the residence hall network
have been rebuilt to provide redundant paths to the Campus core. The
school year is starting with more bandwidth available to the Residence
Hall networks. This includes more bandwidth to the commodity Internet.
In addition, there is agreement between C&C and Residence Hall administration
about how to manage bandwidth allocations for the various services typically
used by students.
C&C Successfully Deployed Mesh Fault-Tolerant Networks in Several
Campus Buildings In addition to the
Residence Hall network, the network in the Hinderaker building has been
given separate paths to the campus core. This is part of the ongoing
process to provide all areas on campus with the improved reliability
made possible by the dual feeds from the new CalREN network.
New UPS and Generator for Stat-Comp A
new 130 kVA UPS has been installed to support the main computer room
in the Statistics/Computing building. This brings the latest technology
in backup power on line to support both computing and network resources
in this facility. An engineering study is nearly completed for the installation
of an emergency diesel AC generator for this facility. This will provide
a very high level of protection for both business and safety resources
housed in this facility. It is expected that this generator will be
brought on line before the end of the fall quarter.
UCR Wireless Network Continues to Grow and Advance Technologically
With guidance from the Faculty Wireless Advisory
Group, expansion plans are ongoing that seek to add to the already broad
wireless coverage area. With input from the many diverse constituencies,
a wireless growth plan has been created to identify and prioritize future
wireless coverage locations. Our wireless team has also been evaluating
emerging wireless standards and has determined that 802.11g (54 Mbits/sec.)
holds the most promise in providing the higher bandwidth we seek to
offer to wireless users at UCR. |

| New CVC
Database Development Services Offered CVC
Database Development offerings began in early 2003. CVC has partnered
with the Client Server Group to develop non-enterprise online applications.
We are developing on an Oracle DB backend using PL/SQL tools to develop
the front end user interface. More information can be found at http://cvc.ucr.edu/?content=services/programming.php.
HR Class Registration System Rolled Out One
of the online applications to come out of the CVC Database Development
offering was the HR Online Registration. This application allows Human
Resources to post current course offerings online and campus staff to
sign up online and reserve a place. There are 45 courses being offered
on the online application. There are also 330 students and instructors
signed up on the database. More information can be found at http://hrtraining.ucr.edu/.
Important Campus Web Resources Created CVC
has been developing enterprise web sites for the deployment of state
and governmental informational web sites. DMCA and SB1386 are such sites
that cover the details of DMCA regulations and SB1386 laws and applications
as it applies to the UC community. Such sites allow C&C and UCR to disseminate
information to the campus community in a convenient way for them to
reference. More information can be found at http://dmca.ucr.edu/
and http://www.cnc.ucr.edu/sb1386/.
Online Modules Created for Just-in-Time Learning using Camtasia
One of the new offerings that CVC is introducing
this year is Online Module designs. Online Modules consist of HTML, Flash,
Quicktime, Camtasia and other tools combined to present a course online.
The course has several lessons as well as a quiz at the end that will
allow instructors to evaluate the student. Student performance is tracked
on a database and the system allows the student to keep track of his training
accomplishments.
CVC has begun to use Camtasia to deploy Help and Training Flash movies
to the web to replace FAQs or text help for applications. Camtasia allows
video screen recording of software applications. This lets users have
a visual representation of how to use various functions of a particular
application at any time. More information can be found at http://cvcwork.ucr.edu/cnc/how.php?content=staff_services/applications/training.html.
SEVIS Update We have 21 users
total from 3 different campus groups (International Office, Graduate
Division, and Undergraduate Division). We also have 718 Students and
147 Scholars in the fsaAtlas database. There have been 223 Student update
batches sent to the Homeland Security Department's computer. More information
can be found at http://cvcwork.ucr.edu/sevis/. |

ADMINISTRATIVE COMPUTING HIGHLIGHTS
|
| Online
Financial Aid Award Letter The Online
Financial Aid Award Letter deployed in early July. With no announcement
or instruction to the students, the first student accepted his Financial
Aid awards at 4:30 A.M. less than 1/2 hour after they were processed.
Along with accepting awards, students can request revisions to their
aid. These revision requests are routed directly to the Financial Aid
counselors.
Summer Session We are in the
design phase of fully automating enrollment, assessment, and billing
of UCR matriculating students attending summer sessions. For Summer
2004, UCR matriculating students will be able to enroll in summer classes
using our existing web enrollment system (PAWS).
Class Wait List The Class Wait
List function for Enrollment is in the testing stage. As this project
was driven by a committee, the testing is now in their hands. The goal
is to have a fully functioning Wait List for the Winter Quarter in 2004.
The process will allow students to put themselves on a Wait List, and
will automatically put them into a class as a seat becomes available.
SIS Upgrade Planning As a result
of the comprehensive planning document produced by the UCR Student Information
System Planning Group last year, funding was approved to move forward
on the enrichment of the current SIS+ system. Two major enhancements
include the development of a Data Warehouse for SIS+ and implementation
of a student portal.
IBM Web/Edify Migration GROWL,
the student web services running directly on the mainframe, is growing
by leaps and bounds, and is handling the growth handsomely. Therefore,
the project to move the remaining web applications running with the
web middleware has moved to the top of our priority list.
SEVIS feed from IBM With the
upcoming Fall Quarter, SIS will directly feed the SEVIS application
with changes to data being tracked on certain visa types. Certain "trigger"
fields have been identified and SIS will alert SEVIS when they change. |

| PeopleSoft
Portal Product chosen for UCR Administrative Portal UCR
has restructured its license agreement with PeopleSoft and consequently
gained complimentary licenses for their Enterprise Portal, E-Procurement,
Content Management, and COBOL compiler products. The PeopleSoft Portal
has been installed and configured to provide the foundation for the
UCR Administrative Transaction-Processing Portal. It currently authenticates
against the UCR Enterprise LDAP Directory and provides single sign-on
to the financial system and custom-developed PeopleTools applications.
A timeline has been approved that calls for a September 2004 migration
to PeopleSoft Web/Portal
PeopleSoft 8.4 Upgrade All of
UCR's PeopleSoft 6 customizations have been inventoried and documented
to chart the course for modifications needed in the 8.4 environment.
To date, 50% of UCR's distributed, online financial applications have
been migrated to 8.4 (budget establishment and adjustment, cost transfer
applications). The current timeline plans for all remaining customizations
to be completed and tested by June, 2004.
Web-based Travel System The development
of UCR's web-based Travel system is 90% complete. Travelers can submit
travel plans and expense reports to their travel coordinators via a
web interface. The travel coordinators then process travel expenses,
scanning and uploading receipts to the Travel database. The entire approval
cycle is also handled via the web, with scanned receipts and documents
available for immediate online retrieval and review. The interface to
UCR's Accounts Payable system is being completed and a Travel Purchase
Order (TPO) system is being integrated for direct-pay travel expenses
(air fare, lodging, etc.).
Update on COEUS/PAMIS The UCR
Proposal and Award Management Information System (PAMIS) has been deployed
to the pilot user group. The version 1 offering features proposal and
award creation, establishment of funds and fund attributes, and creation
of departmental budgets via BEA in a completely online, paperless environment.
Interfaces to the UCR Financial System have been completed, and the
document imaging component allows the Office of Research to scan and
upload award documents so that all supporting documentation is instantly
available online to various types of users across campus.
Enterprise Access Control System (EACS) UCR
has completed development of its Enterprise Access Control System. EACS
is a single, web-based tool, which allows departmental Systems Access
Administrators to grant and maintain user privileges related to our
administrative computing applications. Four applications are already
EACS-aware: Travel, the Printing & Reprographics Work Order System,
the Facilities Management System, and PAMIS BEA. UCR is in the process
of modifying the remaining administrative applications to the EACS authorization
model.
Printing & Reprographics Work Order System A
new Printing and Reprographics Work Order System is now being deployed
at UCR. This web-based system allows users across campus to submit their
printing requests online. Importantly, source documents can be attached
electronically to work orders, eliminating the need for customers to
print and carry originals to the printing office. This highly-configurable
system allows P&R staff to process and bill all work orders electronically
via the web.
Facilities Management System (FMS) In
partnership with Computing and Communications, the UCR Academic Planning
and Budget Office is deploying a web-based facilities management system
that contains all space information related to the Riverside campus.
It features scanned CAD drawings of every room at the University. The
FMS system authenticates against the UCR Enterprise LDAP Directory and
integrates with the UCR FDX, PPS, and Financial systems.
Purchasing UCR has begun design
and development of a new, web-based Purchasing application. The new
system will combine purchase requisition and low-value purchasing capabilities.
It is being designed to interface with EACS, PeopleSoft 8.4, and the
UCR Administrative Transaction Processing Portal. |

| Classroom Technology,
Upgrade of 25% of GA Classrooms Over the Summer This
summer C&C completed a 4 year project that upgrades presentation technology
in general assignment classrooms. The last 14 of the original 51 classrooms
were upgraded this summer. Every classroom received at minimum a 4,000
lumen LCD Projector with a computer interface, DVD and SVHS VCR.
Funding Received to Upgrade 10 Additional GA Classrooms
Faculty have been enjoying the accessibility
of new technologies in their courses. Since the beginning of this project,
10 classrooms have been added as general assignment classrooms. C&C
has received funding to integrate technology into these rooms with the
same array of presentation technology that faculty now enjoy. These
rooms will be completed during the Winter break.
C&C Invited to Submit Funding Proposal for Next 4 Years of Classroom
Technology Upgrades Due to the success
and well-received technology upgrades, the EVC has invited C&C to submit
proposals for funding classroom technology an additional 4 years. The
plan consists of control systems that provide ease of use and a common
user interface. These control systems will be centrally supported and
will provide system security. The plan includes card access to our technology
cabinets that would enhance and facilitate the use and security of all
installed devices. |

COMPUTING INFRASTRUCTURE AND SECURITY HIGHLIGHTS
|
| New E-mail
System Opt-In Process Working closely
with the Microcomputer Support Group, Computing Infrastructure and Security has developed
a web-based resource to simplify the migration from the UCR's current
central e-mail system to our new e-mail system. Aided by the opt-in
web page, users of the current e-mail system can begin using the new
system without support staff intervention.
Blackboard Hardware Upgrade to Sun 880 Our
Blackboard learning management system went through a complete upgrade
over summer to better support the increased demand and to move from
the proprietary (and slow) Blackboard database to Oracle. Hardware was
upgraded from a four processor Sun V480 (16Gb) to an eight processor
Sun V880 (16Gb). The database was also moved from an NFS shared Network
Appliance to faster internal fiber channel drives on the V880. We expect
this upgrade to fully support the over 1000 classes currently using
Blackboard, as well as the new features in the Enterprise version (e.g.
integrated support for grades). |
