Internet 2 Today: New Technologies and More Bandwidth

  • Internet 2 is now being upgraded in California (see map). This upgrade is called the Optical Network Initiative (ONI). Funding for the upgrade and comes from existing UCOP and campus contributions.
  • ONI will create a "matrix" of fiber throughout the state linking the UCs, CSU, USC, CalTech, Stanford and K-14 sites.
  • The speeds on the ONI "backbone" network will be substantially faster that the existing backbone (aggregate bandwidth on some backbone segments will range up to 10 gigabits per second).
