UCR: Remote Access Service (RAS)

UCR RAS

UCR Remote Access Service (RAS)

Off-Campus Network Support for Faculty

Computing and Communications ( C&C) is offering a dial-in service for faculty and librarians that live in the Riverside area. This Remote Access Service (RAS) server has 46 phone lines which can operate at a maximum data rate of 56Kbps. UCR's RAS server provides internet and campus e-mail access in a fashion similar to a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as Earthlink or PE-NET. In addition, there is the possibility of using ISDN for those who can take advantage of it.

This service is not intended, however, to replace your commercial ISP (Earthlink, PE-NET, AOL, etc.). The RAS server has been introduced to meet the needs of faculty and librarians that require off-campus access to electronic library resources (e.g. California Digital Library, Web of Science, Science Direct, etc.). Since these electronic resources often RESTRICT access based on IP numbers (and commercial ISPs do not use UCR IP numbers) this service will supplement personal ISP services and allow faculty and librarians access to these otherwise restricted resources.

Since UCR's RAS server has been designed to be a supplemental service, connect time will be limited to 2 consecutive hours (after two hours of continuous use, the RAS server will "drop" the connection and, if required, the connection will have to be re-established). This is to ensure that all faculty who need access to off-campus library resources will have an opportunity to establish a connection.

This service is part of an ongoing effort to provide faculty with many options for remote, off-campus internet access. C&C and the library have also developed a WebVPN that enables access to electronic library resources directly from a commercial ISP, a cable modem, or DSL connection (anywhere, anytime). For more information, please visit the VPN information page.

Note:

If you want to use the UCR RAS service and you are familiar with the process of setting up dial-up connections on your computer, all you need to know is the UCR RAS phone number, which is 951-827-4RAS (4727). You will authenticate using your UCR NetID and password.
