National Cybersecurity Month
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month; this is a great time to think about whether your electronic devices are secure, and if they're not, what you should do about it. Computing & Communications maintains a focus on security year-round, and offers a number of resources to enhance security and awareness of security best practices on campus.
10 Tips C&C has put together 10 tips to Secure Your Workstation. This list outlines some basic procedures that everyone should follow to ensure cyber security and compliance with the Minmum Standards for Security of Riverside Campus Networked Devices, along with links to resources on this and other web sites.
Security Tutorial The UCR on-line Security Tutorial is designed to provide background on
various cyber risks facing campus technology users, as well as
practical guidelines, techniques, tools, and tips for avoiding and
mitigating these risks. There are 27 slides in the tutorial and it will
take approximately 15 minutes to view.
The CARE Package The Computer Support Group offers a
CARE (Computer Audit & Risk Evaluation) Package for Windows XP and
Vista, which includes analysis of security vulnerabilities and repair
of any existing issues with viruses, spyware, etc. Twelve different
procedures will be performed to ensure your system's security, and any
sensitive data will be flagged and reported with items noted.
Phishing Information Video Associate Vice Chancellor Charles Rowley presents a brief notice to the campus community concerning fraudulent e-mails. These "phishing" e-mails are crafted to look as though they come from
official UCR groups, and ask campus users to provide their
Social Security Numbers, usernames, passwords, birth dates or other
personal information.
UCR Security Awareness Campaign In an effort to educate, inform, and raise awareness of Cyber Security, Computing & Communications has published several promotional posters detailing ways keep your system secure: from preventing identity theft to understanding the dangers of email attachments. Poster prevews and printable versions are available.
