How to Gain Access


Accessing Virtual Lab - VMware Horizon View

There are two ways to access the Virtual Lab, either by installing a client or connecting via the web. The client version is labeled, "VMware Horizon View Client" and the web version is labeled, "VMware Horizon View HTML Access". Each can be found on the VLAB website.

How to Access the Web Version

The web version will not download the client to your computer. Instead, you will access the virtual machine connection via a web application.

1. Select "VMware Horizon View HTML Access"
2. Log In with your username (UCR Net ID), password, and correct domain. Students will use the default domain, "SCSLAB". Faculty and staff will need to use the drop-down and select "ADS".
3. Select the software application you wish to use.
4. The desktop will open; a shortcut will be available on the desktop for the application.
How to Log Off the virtual machine on the web
1. Close the software application you were using.
2. Click the "Start" menu icon.
3. Click on "Log Off"
4. Log out of VMware at the top right and confirm, "Yes"

How to Install & Use the VMware Horizon View Client on Windows

The VMware Horizon View Client is a virtual machine. Please use the following instructions for Windows.

1. Select "Install VMware Horizon View Client"

 
2. From the My VMWare site, select either the 32-bit or 64-bit Windows client, depending on your operating system. Click on "Go to Downloads" next to the appropriate configuration.

Note: Do not select the Local Mode Option.
 

3. Select the most recent version from the drop-down.

Under Product Details, click on the "Download" button.

Save the file to your computer; it is suggested to place it in your desktop or program applications folder.


4. Once downloaded, click the file to install. Agree to the license and follow the install instructions. Each operating system will guide you through the install differently. Windows will use a Setup Wizard. Please use the default settings.

5. The VMware will ask you to add a Default View Connection Server, type in vlab.ucr.edu. Then click Next.

Note: Windows users, please keep the "Set default option to login as current user" unchecked! Please continue to follow the defaults in the setup. Click "Finish" when complete.

6. Windows users will need to restart their computers.

7. If defaults were selected, the VMware Horizon View Client will be located on your desktop. Open the client.
8. Connect to vlab.ucr.edu

9. Enter your username (UCR Net ID) and password. 

Students will need to use the "SCSLAB" domain. Faculty and Staff will need to use the dropdown and switch to "ADS".

10. Open the software application you wish to use.

This will transition your computer to open the virtual desktop for VMware.

11. The virtual machine's desktop will open; a shortcut on the virtual desktop will be available for the application, as well as any necessary applications.

In this example, Mathematica was chosen.

How to Log Off the virtual machine
1. Close the software application you were using.  
2. Click the "Start" menu icon  
3. Click on "Log Off"  

How to Install & Use the VMware Horizon View Client on Mac

The VMware Horizon View Client is a virtual machine. Please use the following instructions for Mac.

1. Select "Install VMware Horizon View Client" from http://vlab.ucr.edu
2. From the My VMWare site, click the "Go to Downloads" button under the VMware Horizon View Client for Mac.

3. Select the most recent version from the drop-down.Under Product Details, click on the "Download" button.

Save the file to your computer; it is suggested to place it in on your desktop.



4. Open the dmg file that was saved to the computer.
5. Agree to the license agreement.
6. To install the client, drag the application icon to the application folder.

7. Open the VMware View client and click on "Add Server".

Enter the name of the View Connection Server in the Hostname field. The host is vlab.ucr.edu

8. Click on the vlab.ucr.edu cloud.

9. Enter your username (UCR Net ID) and password. Make sure the domain is set for "SCSLAB" if you are a student.

Note: Faculty and staff will need to toggle to the "ADS" domain.

10. Open the software application you wish to use.

This will transition your computer to open the virtual desktop for VMware.

11. The virtual machine's desktop will open; a shortcut on the virtual desktop will be available for the application, as well as any necessary applications.

In this example, SAS was chosen.

How to Log Off the virtual machine
1. Close the software application you were using.  
2. Click the "Start" menu icon  
3. Click on "Log Off"
