Using AnyConnect


What is AnyConnect?

AnyConnect is a program you install on your computer to connect to campus services. AnyConnect tunnels all internet traffic through UCR's VPN, so it can be used for library services (including desktop applications such as SciFinder Scholar), as well as sending e-mail with e-mail clients when off-campus. AnyConnect supports a wider variety of operating systems than the traditional VPN client, including 64-bit operating systems.

System Requirements

You will need to install the Java Runtime Environment in order to install the AnyConnect client, if you do not already have it. You must also have Javascript enabled in your browser.

Internet Explorer users:

Internet Explorer users: UCR's Anyconnect site must be in the list of trusted sites. To add the security appliance to the list of trusted sites:

  1. Choose Internet Options. To do so, use the following method:
    • Open Internet Explorer and choose Tools > Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click the Trusted sites icon, then click the Sites button below.
  4. Type https://vpn.ucr.edu
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK on the Security tab.

The client application must be installed locally on your computer. Supported operating systems include:

  • Microsoft Windows 7 x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit)
  • Windows Vista SP2 x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit)
  • Windows XP SP3 x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit) or later
  • Mac OS X 10.4 or greater
  • Linux x86 and x64 via REL5 and 6, and Ubuntu 9.X and 10.X (other distributions and/or versions are known to work, but are not officially supported)

Always log out when done to avoid someone using your account to gain access to UCR's network.

Installing and Using AnyConnect

Initial Installation

Point your browser to https://vpn.ucr.edu and choose the "AnyConnect" in the drop down box.

Enter your UCRNetID and password to log in

Anyconnect Login

The AnyConnect installer will automatically start if you have not installed the client.

You may be asked whether you want to run the application. Click "Run"

Click "Run"

The AnyConnect Installer will start. Wait while it completes; this may take a few minutes.

Mac users: you will need to type your Mac's password in order to install.

When the process completes, you will see the "Connection established" message.

Install complete
The AnyConnect icon will be visible in your system tray (Windows) or Dock (Mac). Use this icon to control your connection. AnyConnect Connected icon
To disconnect from AnyConnect VPN session, right click on icon in the dock or system tray and click "Disconnect" AnyConnect Disconnect
Windows users: A disconnected icon will appear in your dock or system tray. The Dock icon does not change for Mac users. Anyconnect idle icon
If you have already installed AnyConnect:

Browse to https://vpn.ucr.edu and choose the "AnyConnect" option in the drop-down box, then log in with your UCR NetID and password. The AnyConnect client will automatically launch, or if updates are needed, will automatically be updated.

You can alternatively connect using the AnyConnect client itself by opening the AnyConnect client, typing in "vpn.ucr.edu" in the box under "Ready to connect" and clicking the "Connect" button. Choose the "AnyConnect" group option, type in your NetID and password then click "OK"
