RMail for Faculty

Faculty Move to R'Mail

A University-wide migration for faculty from on-premises Exchange email accounts to UCR’s branded Google collaboration suite called R’Mail is planned. Computing and Communications (C&C) has evaluated the efficacy of deploying cloud based email, calendaring, and various accompanying collaboration tools. Migrating our email services to the cloud will allow UCR the ability to maintain and improve upon our existing enterprise email and collaboration tool offerings, without requiring us to invest heavily in upgrading our infrastructure to meet our campus’s growing needs.  There are many advantages to moving to a cloud based email offering, which are highlighted below.

  • Cost Savings: Cloud infrastructure allows us to leverage a robust infrastructure, without incurring additional costs to upgrade and support our existing on premise infrastructure needs.
  • Improves Collaboration:  Because UCR students have already been migrated to R’Mail previously, switching to Google will improve collaboration amongst faculty and students, allowing them to work seamlessly across Google Docs.
  •  Branding: Google will allow branding for their portal, which will allow UCR to maintain our branding presence.
  • No Advertising: Advertising will not disrupt the user experience with Google, as they do not display advertising to users of their cloud email services.
  • Privacy & Confidentiality: Provisions for ensuring confidentiality, privacy, and security of UCR e-mail and documents are provided.  There is no data mining of UCR data conducted by Google.
  • Your mailbox will have unlimited storage
  • Unlimited online storage with Google Drive
  • Access from anywhere and work across multiple devices
  • UCR continues to own all content uploaded to Google servers.

R'Mail provided by Google

UCR will leverage the University of California / Google agreement for the Google Apps for Education suite of tools and services. G'mail powered email accounts provide unlimited e-mail storage, server-side virus scanning of all e-mail messages, web-based access, and POP/IMAP access. R'mail provides faculty with a high level of flexibility and security.

  • Professors and TA's often use e-mail to notify students of class changes, exams, and other class related information.
  • Students use R'Mail, and therefore use its other applications. Using the same tools will provide more flexibility.
  • Set your Google password at the Password Portal – details are found under the POP/IMAP section.
