RMail for Faculty

Email Privacy

As with all electronic services provided by UC Riverside, any cloud-supported services will adhere to the University of California, Riverside Electronic Communications Policy (ECP).   This also applies to data and communications via R'mail and Google tools under the UC Riverside domain. UCOP maintains a contract for Cloud Services. "The terms of UC’s contract with Google are in compliance with UC’s legal and policy requirements. "

UCR Email Privacy

UCR recognizes that core University principles relating to academic freedom and shared governance, freedom of speech, and respect for privacy and confidentiality hold important implications for the management and use of campus electronic communications resources. UCR does not examine nor disclose electronic communications without the holder’s consent. UCR only permits the inspection, monitoring, or disclosure of electronic communications records without the consent of the holder of such records under compelling circumstances and when appropriate campus approvals have been obtained (ie, Provost approval for faculty, VC-BAS approval for staff and VCSA approval for Students).

Google Legal Requests

As in any legal request, Google works with appropriate government agencies to fill subpoenas and legal requests for data. The government needs to follow legal process, such as a subpoena, court order or search warrant, to force Google to disclose user data.  Google reviews any request to make sure it satisfies legal requirements as well as Google's policies. The request must be made in writing, signed by an authorized official of the requesting agency and issued under an appropriate law. Google does not fulfill broad requests for data, but rather works with government agencies to define a very specific and narrow request.
