Google Drive Transition

Transition from Google Drive Client


As of May 12, 2018 Google Drive File Sync client application will be retired and no longer available as a file storage/sharing option.  Google now offers two new file storage/sharing options: 

  • Google Backup and Sync.  This service syncs and stores content locally on your computer.  Download
  • Google Drive File Stream.  This service streams all files and folders from the cloud.  You can only use this service with your UCR account.  Download

The transition process involves:

1. STEP ONE: Verify File Storage
2. STEP TWO: Uninstall "Google Drive Application"
3. STEP THREE: Second File Storage Verification
4. STEP FOUR: Delete your old "Google Drive" Folder
5. STEP FIVE: Install Drive File Stream and/or Backup & Sync

STEP ONE:  Verify file storage

Before uninstalling Google Drive verify the storage space used (you will re-check the storage space on the web after Google Drive is removed to confirm all files/folders are available):

               Login to Google Drive at with your UCR NetID

STEP TWO:  Uninstall Google Drive

Uninstall Google Drive - WINDOWS:

1. Click the Google Drive icon (usually in the bottom right task bar).  

2. Click the Options icon at the top right.

3. Click Preferences >Disconnect account.

4. Open the Start menu.

5. Select Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Google Drive.

6. Click Uninstall.

Uninstall Google Drive - MAC:

1. Quit the Google Drive application by opening the Google Drive menu and selecting Quit.

2. Open the Applications folder.

3. Drag Google Drive to the trash (on your Dock).

4. You can purge your trash by right-clicking the trash and selecting Empty Trash.

STEP THREE:  Confirm your files are available

  1. Open up your Google Drive at
  2. Verify all of your files are listed here, comparing folder storage size from above. 
  3. Once everything appears valid, proceed to STEP FOUR

STEP FOUR:  Delete your old "Google Drive" folder

Delete the files in your "Google Drive" folder, where you were previously syncing from Google Drive to your computer.

STEP FIVE:  Install Drive File Stream and/or Backup & Sync

Visit the Download link to install Drive File Stream and/or Backup & Sync

Here is a comparison of Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream to determine the best option to meet your needs.  ITS recommends users begin the transition to one of these services as soon as possible to avoid any disruption of access to files and folders.  Users must uninstall Google Drive File Sync and setup the new service.
