Protected data as defined by California Law (SB1386)

Research Data involving personal protected information, as defined by SB1386, requires a high level of security to ensure data is not breached. Additionally, IS3 requires the reporting of all systems that contain personal protected data be reported annually to the CIO. The annual inventory process is coordinated with each Organizations Responsibile Administrative Official and Data Proprietors. Medical Records data as defined by HIPAA

Research Data involving medical information, as defined by HIPAA, requires the highest level of security, equivalent to Personal Protected Data.

Research Data requiring appropriate safeguards - Student Information

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Therefore, data that involves student information governed by FERPA, requires the highest level of security, equivalent to Personal Protected Information.

Research Data Requiring Special Safe Guards by Granting Agency

Depending upon the Granting Agency, additional safe guards may be required to ensure protection of research data. It is incumbent upon the Principal Investigator to adhere to the additional security measures, in addition to the General Security measures identified above.
