How Do I

  • Q: What is UCRWPA?

The "ucrwpa" SSID is an WPA2 encrypted network. Users on this network will authenticate using a wireless client utility that is provided by your wireless hardware vendor or an open-source vendor. The user's data is encrypted from the wireless device to the UCR campus network and cannot be "sniffed" by hackers. It is recommended for use while on campus as it is more secure than Mobilenet.

Note: ucrwpa is a more secure and complex network and requires some effort to configure.

  • Q: What is mobilenet?

The "mobilenet" SSID is an open, non-encrypted network. This network has a browser based captive portal that authenticates users. Users must use VPN or application based security methods (SSL, SSH) to protect personal information.

Note: mobilenet is a coffee house type public wireless network and is relatively easy to configure and connect to.

  • Q: What is eduroam?
eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming wireless access service developed for the international research and education community. eduroam, which is an encrypted (WPA2) wireless service, allows students, researchers, faculty, and staff from UCR to obtain internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions.
  • Q: What do I need to use the wireless network if I already have a laptop?
If your laptop does not come with an internal wireless card, then all you need to purchase is a wireless card that is 802.11a, 802.11g or 802.11n compliant.
  • Q: Does my Mac laptop with Airport work on the UCR network?
Yes, you can use your Mac laptop on the UCR network if you have the Airport card.
  • Q: Is there a cost to use the UCR wireless network?
There are no costs to use the wireless network at UCR.
  • Q: How do I know what areas are covered?
Coverage is available throughout most of the campus, though some small areas may have little or no connectivity.
  • Q: Can I access the UCR wireless network with my PDA or iPhone?
Many mobile devices have the cababilities to use the UCR wireless network
  • Q: How do I find out my wireless username and password?
For students, the username is their UCR Net ID (ex: jdoe001) and the password is their UCR Permanent PIN. If students are unaware of their UCR Net ID, they can look it up at a Kiosk Computer located in either the Watkins, Sproul, or Statistics Computer Labs. If students are unaware of their Permanent PIN, they should visit the Registrar's Office or their academic advisor.
Faculty and staff will use their UCR NetID to login to the wireless network. Please read the UCR Net ID information on the ESAI website for more information
